When someone begins cancer treatment, many friends want to help but are unsure what would actually make a difficult week easier. Practical support works best when it is specific, reliable and led by the person receiving it.

1. Offer one concrete task

Instead of saying “let me know if you need anything”, offer a school pickup, a pharmacy run or one prepared meal on a particular day. A clear offer is easier to accept.

2. Help with transport

Treatment schedules can be tiring and parking can add stress. Offer a return trip, wait nearby or coordinate a small driver roster—with permission.

3. Keep communication low-pressure

A brief message that does not require a reply can feel supportive without creating another obligation. Follow the person’s lead about visits and updates.

4. Include carers

Carers may also need a meal, a break or someone to listen. Ask what would help the whole household, not only the person in treatment.

5. Stay present after treatment

Support often drops away when appointments become less frequent. A check-in, practical errand or invitation months later can matter enormously.

The most useful support protects dignity and choice. Ask first, listen carefully and do what you said you would do.
